Read Across America Day - March 2, 2017

Are you ready to celebrate the magical, whimsical stories of Dr. Seuss with the library? Join us next week for amazing stories that are "truer than true and you'er than you!" Oh the things you will do, when you visit your local library on Dr. Seuss' birthday (March 2). You may find yourself crafting a cat! A cat in a hat! Or dining on delectable Green Eggs and Ham. You may find a special guest reader, a fan-tab-ulous treat, special characters and yummy cake to eat! Join us next week (see the schedule below)! You won't want to miss it, you know where to go.

We are looking for writers in grades 3-8 to participate in our annual Black History Month writing contest with the theme: Why I Celebrate Black History Month

Monday, February 6, - Saturday, February 25, 2017
Essay must be received on or before Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Palmetto Branch.
Essay Guidelines:

  1. Essay must be 200 words or less.
  2. Writer must complete and attach the submission form.
  3. One essay per student. 
  4. One winner will be chosen from each grade level, (grades 3 -8) for a total of six (6) winners.
  5. Winners will be selected on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 and notified on Thursday, March 9, 2017.
  6. All winners will receive a prize and recognition during the Summer Reading Kickoff.

The Big Ticket: Invictus

Invictus tells the extraordinary human story of how that moment became possible. It shows how a sport, once the preserve of South Africa's Afrikaans-speaking minority, came to unify the new rainbow nation and tells of how - just occasionally - something as simple as a game can help people to rise above themselves and see beyond their differences.

Please join us as we welcome children's author, Ms. Akua Agosi to Southwest library for the celebration of Black History Month. Ms. Akua Agosi will be reading her latest book “Madam C.J. Walker's Road To Success”, to the children. Ms.  Akua Agosi is devoted to writing books that instill and promote children’s pride as well as awareness in African culture.  All of Akua's books introduce a sense of pride, encouragement and the power to overcome any situation and achieve difficult goals.
