Here are 25 ways you can participate March 4-10, 2012 so you can get into the theme of Geek Out @ Your Library! These ideas brought to you by The American Library Association's Young Adult Library Service's Association.

1. Visit the library’s webpage at www.afpls.org.

2. Download an eBook or eAudiobook from the library.

3. Download mobile library apps to your phone or tablet.

4. Check out the library’s blog at http://afpls.blogspot.com.

5. Try a book-focused site like GoodReads, LibraryThing or Shelfari.

6. Create a soundtrack or book trailer for your favorite book.

7. Ask a librarian to recommend a book on an area of technology that interests you.

8. Add something to an article on Wikipedia.

9. Set up a podcast for a group or club you belong to.

10. Find the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library on Facebook and “Like” us!

11. Check out your favorite author’s webpage or blog.

12. Create an avatar on Yahoo! Avatars.

13. Start a Teen Tech Club at your school or library branch.

14. Read and contribute to a blog about technology.

15. Download a newspaper article from the day you were born using on of the

Read Across America 2012!

Every year the National Education Association (NEA) celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 2nd with the Read Across America event. This year we have a very special 2012 Read Across America celebration with a green theme. The campaign will showcase The Lorax book as well as NBC/Universal's The Lorax, which opens nationwide on March 2, 2012. This year the event is getting the star treatment with the cast of the film, Taylor Swift, Zac Effron, Betty White, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms and Rob Riggle acting as honorary Co-chairs and taking time from their busy schedules to record two promotional videos for NEA.

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will be participating in this day of reading for the whole family, so check our events calendar to see what may be taking place in a branch near you. And don't forget you can always make your own family fun at home by checking out materials from your local library. Check the catalog for books, videos and audiobooks featuring all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters. Or check out this "family literacy bag" of activities for The Lorax, brought to you by the organization, Reading Rockets.

Black Stars in Orbit: Celebrating the Contributions of African Americans to Space Exploration
Saturday, February 18. 3:00 p.m.
Dr. Curtis M. Graves, retired Deputy Director for Civil Affairs at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will discuss his 30-year career at NASA and the extraordinary achievements of African American astronauts and scientists to the exploration of space. African-American Women Stories on Film

Join us for the film screening of For Colored Girls. The film is based on Ntozake Shange's play. Each of the poems deal with intense issues that particularly impact women in a thought-provoking commentary on what it means to be a female of color. Our Stories: African American History for Children -- An Afternoon with Calvin Ramsey

In recognition of Black History Month the Roswell Branch will host renowned author and playwright Calvin Alexander Ramsey, who will discuss his thoughtful works of illustrated children’s literature highlighting the African American experience. This discussion will include Mr. Ramsey’s book Ruth and the Green Book, the powerful story of a young girl’s journey from Chicago through the segregated South to her Grandma’s house in Alabama; and Belle, The Last Mule at Gee's Bend: A Civil Rights Story, the moving tale of a mule that played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement – and a young boy who sees history anew. Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. At Your Library!

In the many years since his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has evolved into a symbol for the entire civil rights movement in the United States. Every year the nation celebrates all of the ideals, beliefs and accomplishments of this great man around his birthday. This year is no exception, so why not visit your local branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System to participate in some King Celebration Programs? Programs range in appeal from children to adults and can be found in branches throughout the system. You can also check the events calendar for updated events and programs at your local branch. While you're in the library, why not browse for more information about Dr. King? Biographies, journal articles, and many films documenting the life and times of Dr. King can be found throughout the library system.

The Auburn Avenue Research Library also has many upcoming programs and events in recognition of the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, and you can check their event listings here.

Genealogy @ Your Library!

If you're interested in learning about your ancestors, or simply must know if you are related to anyone famous (or infamous!), then the upcoming holiday season can provide a great chance to start doing a little research into your family tree. Asking grandparents and great-grandparents about other family and events they remember can be a great place to start. With that information in hand and a little bit of research using some of the resources from the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System, you can work your way back through time, finding ancestors along the way!

HeritageQuest Online and Ancestry Library Edition are both available through the library's A-Z Database list. HeritageQuest can be used from home to search census records and family histories. To access this database, you will need the current GALILEO password, which you can find by logging into your library account with your card number and PIN, and following these directions. You will need to go to your local library branch to search Ancestry Library Edition for birth, death, and marriage records, census, military and immigration records, and much more. And of course you can check the library catalog for any print materials available that may help you with your search.

The Special Collections Department of the Central Library houses the Library System's Genealogy Collection. This collection of sources has an emphasis on Georgia, but information from other Southern states may also be found here. GALILEO has also compiled an extensive list of online databases and websites geared towards Georgia family histories, including the Digital Library of Georgia.

Spotlight on NoveList!

Have you ever had trouble figuring out what the next title in your favorite series is? Or been searching for a book just like the last one you read? Or maybe you've been searching for authors like the one that finally got your child to sit down and read happily for hours? Well, one of the best resources to answer all these questions (besides your local librarian, of course!) is a database called NoveList. All Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System card holders have free access to this database through the library's website, twenty-four hours a day. NoveList makes it easy to find series, title or author recommendations based on books you've previously read, or genres you particularly enjoy. Here's how you get started:

1. Go to the library's homepage at www.afpls.org.
2. Under Books, Research and Databases, click on A-Z Databases.
3. Scroll down the list and click on NoveList. Note, if you are outside of the
library you will be asked for your library card number!
4. In the search box type in your description of a book you'd like to read, or
search for specific authors, titles, and series.
5. Each result from your search will also give you 9 author read-alikes and 9 title
read-alikes.
6. Print or save your lists and use them to search the library catalog for your next great read!

Celebrate Louisa May Alcott @ Your Library!

Author Louisa May Alcott is known around the world for her book Little Women, but few are aware of Alcott as a bold, compelling woman growing up in the innermost circles of the Transcendentalist and antislavery movements, serving as a nurse in the Civil War, and leading a secret literary life writing pulp fiction. Influenced by family friends such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller, Alcott experienced a rich intellectual life which in turn influenced her writing.

Join the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System as we celebrate the life and historical and cultural context that inspired Louisa May Alcott's impressive body of work. Through her writing Alcott was able to express her views on social reform, from women's rights, to racial integration, to education, but her body of work also encompassed sensational thrillers, Gothic novels, fairy tales and works of domestic realism.

Through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is pleased to offer several events and programs during September, October and November that will highlight her career, life, and some of her lesser known works.

The Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta (LAMA) will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk for Literacy on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 8 a.m. Register today to help support the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System's literacy initiatives by selecting AFPLS to benefit from your registration fees! Be sure to indicate that you want your support to go to the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Your donation will go to help with our many literacy programs, including GED preparation and testing, and adult tutoring.

Not able to actually attend the 5K that Saturday? No problem! You can register as a Phantom Walker and still support literacy in our communities. 6th Annual AJC Decatur Book Festival!

Yes, it's that time of year again. Time to celebrate this Labor Day at the 6th Annual AJC Decatur Book Festival, the largest independent book festival in the nation! The fun kicks off on Saturday, September 3rd, continuing throughout the holiday weekend, and all parts of the festival are free and open to the public. Visit the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System at booth 127 on Saturday and Sunday for crafts and storytelling for children, library card sign-up, and to learn about all the great things we have going on at our 34 branches. Many of our talented librarians will be on hand to represent our library system and to answer any questions you might have.

The list of visiting authors that will descend on the downtown Decatur square is quite impressive, so you truly don't want to miss out on seeing any of them! According to the DBF website, this year's keynote speakers are Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) and acclaimed illustrator Carson Ellis, the nationally renowned pair behind a new book of bravery and adventure for families, kids, and adults alike: Wildwood.

Authors will give readings, panel discussions, book talks and signings. You can see the full list , or browse them by genre. Check the schedule ahead of time to plan out your weekend, and for all the latest updates and newsworthy tidbits, you can follow the festival on Twitter and Facebook!

An array of activities for children, teens and adults should keep the whole family entertained. You can even bring in your own books for appraisal by the Georgia Antiquarian Booksellers Association.

National Black Arts Festival

The National Black Arts Festival (NBAF) is one of the premier national and international presenters of the culture, music and art of people of African descent. Their mission is to "engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression."

The NBAF summer festival is now in full swing and will last through July 17, 2011, with many exhibits and shows running throughout the rest of the summer. Various events will be held during this time throughout the city of Atlanta celebrating visual art, music, dance, theatre and film produced by artists of African heritage. You can even celebrate with the library by checking out these exhibits and workshops at the Auburn Avenue Research Library.

Summer is about half over but you still have time to sign your children-or yourself!-up for Summer Reading 2011. You have until August 1 to get yourselves signed up and reading. Children, grades 5 and below, have to read 10 books to qualify. Teens, grades 6-12, have to read 5 and Adults just need to read. If you think you can do that then get yourself over to your nearest branch and sign up. If you are reading anyway, might as well get yourself in the running for prizes and free food!

Well, this upcoming book fair will have representatives from two publishing companies on hand for anyone who has questions about writing and getting published in today's publishing climate.

The Fulton County Employees Association is hosting a Book/Author Fair on June 30, 2011 in the Atrium of the Fulton County Government Center from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. More than 20 authors will be on hand to sell and autograph their books too. Summer Reading @ Your Library!

June 1, 2011 marks the kick off of this year's summer reading program for kids of all ages. The themes this year celebrate world culture and travel. Children through age 12 will read books with the theme One World, Many Stories, while teens will use You Are Here as a guide for choosing summer reads. Even Moms and Dads can join in the fun by reading books with Novel Destinations, perfect for all you armchair travelers out there!

All branches of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will be participating in this even through August 1st. All you have to do is visit your local branch and sign up. Children and Teens read a certain number of books and receive prizes. There's even a grand prize drawing for both age groups, so be sure and complete the program so you can enter! You can also access suggested summer reading titles from Fulton County Schools here, and then search the library catalog to find the ones you want. You should also check your school's website for any required summer reading lists they may have posted.

2011 Man Booker International Prize Announced

The Man Booker International Prize , which supports the annual Man Booker Prize for fiction, is awarded every two years to a living author for a body of work that has either been published originally in English or is widely translated in the English language. Literary excellence is it's primary focus, and this year's winner is literary giant, Philip Roth. Chosen from a list of 13 prominent contenders, Roth is one of the world's most prolific writers and has been both celebrated and controversial throughout his career. He is best known for his 1969 novel, Portnay's Complaint and the Pulitzer-Prize winning American Pastoral (1997).

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System has many of Roth's novels and short stories, which you can find by searching the catalog.

Get Caught Reading!

Did you know that May is Get Caught Reading Month? It's a great time to remind yourself just how much fun reading can be for all ages. Set aside a few moments every day for reading and let yourself get caught up in the power of written words.

Get Caught Reading Month was started in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers and is supported by the likes of Laura Bush, Alicia Keys, Diane Sawyer, LL Cool J, Emma Roberts, Grant Hill and more! All you have to do to participate is pick up a book-it's that easy!

The Get Caught Reading Program also sponsors a Literacy Program with tips and information on how to improve children's reading abilities by reading to them from an early age. There are also resources for teachers as well as information on the program in Spanish.

So get out there this month and get caught reading-you'll be glad you did.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo, The 5th of May, is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day. It actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is also more widely celebrated as a fun food and drink filled day in the United States than it is in Mexico!

There are a number of ways to get in on the celebration, and yes, you can even do so by visiting your local library! Check the catalog for books about the history and significance of this holiday, brush up on your Spanish by checking out some language learning CDs or by logging into the Mango Languages database from our homepage, or take home a Spanish-language film to watch with the family (with the subtitles in English for those of us who need that!) Mango Visits AFPLS!

One of Mango Language's language learning specialists, Ryan Soble, recently visited a branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library to speak to students from two high schools regarding Mango and E-resources offered by the library. The visit was targeted for students who are taking a Chinese course in their school, and everyone involved learned a lot from this partnership.

AFPLS's Twana Cannon, the coordinator for the event, deserves an extra special shout out for arranging and facilitating this program!

Spring Break @ Your Library

Next week lots of area schools, including Fulton County and City of Atlanta, will be on Spring Break, and we want you to know the library is prepared! In addition to checking out loads of books, DVD's and CD's, come on in and check out all of the programs that will be taking place throughtout the week at all the branches of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. There are programs for all ages that range in activities from gaming to storytelling and pilates to videography. Check the calendar to see what kinds of things are taking place in your local branch. Public Input Sessions For New Libraries

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System wants to hear from you about what you would like to see in your new libraries. The design process begins this year on the 8 new libraries and 2 expanded libraries that make up Phase I of the Library Building Program. Community engagement has been the cornerstone of our Facility Master Plan, and we would like to hear more from our patrons! Public input sessions are being held at various locations throughout March and April. Click here to find information on locations, dates and times of these gatherings.

Help Rebuild Cairo's Public Libraries

The recent uprisings in Egypt have brought about many changes for the Egyptian people, but unfortunately not all of these have been positive. Two of Cairo's public libraries were destroyed and burned during the riots, leaving a significant group of people without access to the information and opportunities that public libraries provide. The destruction of a public library is a blow felt by all, but if we rally together and show support for these institutions, we can help open their doors once more. Read Across America!

Every year the National Education Association brings us Read Across America Day to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2nd. This year there are several ways to participate in all the reading fun. Many branches of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will be hosting activities throughout the week, and you can also check out Seussville, an online resource page featuring a teacher's guide, activities, games and much more!

And don't forget you can always make your own family fun at home by checking out materials from your local library. Check the AFPLS catalog for books, videos and audiobooks featuring all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters. Or check out this family "literacy bag" of activities for the story Green Eggs and Ham, brought to you by the organization, Reading Rockets.

Parents and children can visit the Read Across America pledge site and make their promise to get reading!

All the News That's Fit to View

Many of our patrons come into the library looking for old newspaper articles. Old is often only a few days ago but sometimes it's years and even decades ago. While many newspapers allow you to search for old articles for fee, AFPLS allows access to many back issues and even historical newspapers for free with your library card!

We have theAtlanta Journal-Constitution available online from 1985 to the present. This paper can be access from any AFPLS branch. You must be inside a library for free access. Once at a library computer, go to the library homepage, click on A-Z Databases then scroll down to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Databases are listed alphabetically.

Newspapers nation and world-wide can be accessed from another database, America's Newspapers. Dates available vary from paper to paper. For example, the Detroit News is available from 1999-present; the Chicago Tribune is available from 1985; the Washington Post from 1977; and the Miami Herald is available from 1982.

You can also access the Historical New York Times, with dates from 1851 to 1980.

We also have a database specifically for obituaries called America's Obituaries & Death Notices.

These and many other online resources are available through AFPLS' database page.

Win Is Back

Harlan Coben is a great mystery/thriller writer and his most popular characters are Myron Bolitar and Win Horne Lockwood III. Mr. Coben had taken a bit of a break in writing titles for this series and had instead written several stand-alone thrillers in which Myron has appeared here and there. However, the new Myron book is being published this March and FINALLY, Win is back! You can read the first 2 pages of Coben's new book, Live Wire, here.

If you have never read one of the Myron Bolitar books then I suggest you get your hands on a few titles. Myron Bolitar is a former college basketball star who was forced out due to injury. Instead of the NBA he tackled law school and is now a sports agent. His best friend Win performs many less-then-legal assists, as well as financial support, as they solve many thrills and crimes in both the sports world and their personal lives. State Parks & Zoo Atlanta Passes

The library is happy to be able to offer our patrons free access to both state parks and Zoo Atlanta. Each branch in the system-except for Auburn Avenue- has one of each that can be checked out and used for free entrance for families of 4 (or you and 3 friends!). These passes cannot be reserved/placed on hold or renewed-they are first come, first serve.

The Zoo Atlanta pass works for general admission only and cannot be used for any special events.

The Georgia State Parks pass is good for free parking or admission at any of the 63 state park or historic site for up to 5 days.

Ask at any AFPLS library location for more information and to see if the passes are currently available for checkout.

Tax Season @ AFPLS

It's a new year and already the tax questions have started! The majority of our libraries will have tax forms available. Many forms and publications will only start going out between January 25-February 15.
